Chimney Repairs

An open fire or log burner makes a house a home, yet with your fireplace comes a chimney. Any faults within it can have a major impact on the efficiency of your fire, so it is crucial it is well maintained. Here at Green Leaf Roofing LLC, we can provide chimney repairs for both domestic and commercial properties, including chimney pointing or chimney removal.

What is repointing?

Repointing or sometimes called tuckpointing is the process of renewing the external portion of the mortar joints, called pointing, in a masonry construction. The tools used are called pointing trowels. After being exposed to various external elements, the chimney becomes highly vulnerable to decay and damage. These damages may lead to gaps and voids in the joints between the masonry units, which are usually bricks. These gaps would allow the entrance of water. When water begins to enter, you should expect a lot of problems such as salt dissolution and deposition and frost weathering.

When is it ideal to repoint my chimney?

The moment you begin to notice the appearance of cracks in your chimney is the best moment to call up a chimney company to conduct the repointing. Once there is a crack, no matter how big or small, water entering the fixture would become a high possibility. And we’ve already established how bad water infiltration is. So call someone the second that you see a crack on your chimney and not a moment sooner.

What happens during a chimney repointing?

When repointing a chimney, it begins by the removal of the damaged pointing. The depth removed is always slightly more than or is equal to the width of the joint. The removal of the old mortar should be done carefully to avoid damaging the pointing. For houses or buildings that are really old, removal by means of the hand is most commonly applied as it is the most effective and prevents damage. Pointing that’s done poorly would result to a raised mortar joint causing the feathering of the mortar edge. Aside from being aesthetically unpleasing, this may cause problems such as erosion in the future.
